Logan: Watch Dafne Keen's X-23 Audition

20th Century Fox is offering X-Men movie fans a chance to see how Dafne Keen was cast in her breakout role as X-23 in Logan.

A special feature on the upcoming Logan Blu-ray release shows portions of Keen's audition tape, which she took a surprising amount of control over.

"James [Mangold] showed me a clip of her audition on camera, and he said, 'I'd just like to know what you think of this. It was playing a scene and it was very, very good," star Patrick Stewart recalls in the video. He goes to comment on how Keen improvised the scene and spoke partly in Spanish. "It was one of the most extraordinary bits of audition tape I'd ever seen in my life."

"There are qualities you can't ask of someone to deliver," says producer Hutch Parker. " A level of strength, a sort of stage presence and a maturity that still doesn't really make sense to me. It felt like she could do this most difficult thing of, on the one hand, being the sort of emotional co-star with Hugh [Jackman] and with Patrick and on top of that then also manage the physicality, which was pretty demanding. She was really a remarkable discovery."

Looking back on the audition, Jackman mostly remembers the bruises.

"She came for the audition and there's a scene where she punches me in the arm," Jackman recalls. "I went home and I had bruises all over my arms. No offense to all the guys I've fought, but I've never gone home with bruises until that day."
