A rumored cameo appearance by Deadpool in Logan‘s post-credits sequence turned out, instead, to be a bit of pre-movie viral marketing — and along the way, Fox used some iconic music and imagery to evoke Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie.

Attached to prints of Logan in theaters is essentially a Deadpool short film by Deadpool 2 director David Leitch. In what’s unlikely to be a scene from Deadpool 2 but doesn’t really qualify as a trailer, fans got a glimpse of Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson out of his costume — before duty calls and he springs into action…

…kind of.

When an old man is being mugged, Wilson ducks into a conveniently-placed phone booth to change into his Deadpool costume. The costume, though, is tucked away in a bag he’s carrying, not being worn under his suit.

So instead of a quick shirt-rip that would have seen Deadpool pop back out of the booth in a matter of seconds, most of the scene takes place while the old man fights with the mugger in the background and the camera remains fixed on the phone booth, where Wilson struggles to get his tights on.

The whole time it’s happening, though, what’s probably the funniest and most remarkable part is that Fox managed to clear the rights to John Williams’s iconic theme from Superman: The Movie, which plays dramatically as Wade grunts, bumps into things, and presses ham against the inside of the phone booth.

It’s likely Fox managed to score the rights to the song because the Donners’ Company — owned by Superman: The Movie director Richard Donner and his wife Lauren Shuler Donner.

Shuler Donner has served as a producer on every X-Men movie since the franchise launched, and she has also maintained a decent relationship with DC Entertainment and Warner Bros., having financed some of the Keanu Reeves Constantine movie, among other things.
