The cast of 20th Century Fox‘s upcoming New Mutants film is beginning to take shape. Inspired by the X-Men spinoff comic of the same name, fans have wondered which characters from the source material will be adapted to the big screen. And now, a new casting call has possibly added another mutant to the film’s roster, as well as a younger version of one of the film’s main characters.

According to Omega Underground, there are a handful of new principal roles that the film is currently trying to cast. The first casting call – which you can read below – appears to be for a younger version of Anya Taylor-Joy’s Illyana Rasputina, a.k.a. Magik.
“YOUNG ANNA โ Female, 9 โ 12; preferably blonde, or willing to temporary color; Russian accent or Russian language skills.”
While this might not signify much for New Mutants‘ roster, as Taylor-Joy’s casting has been known for quite some time, it does give a small indication of the film’s plot. The casting indicates that we will see some sort of flashback to Illyana’s childhood in the film, although it’s unclear as to what capacity.
The character’s comic book origins are fairly dense, involving abductions, alternate dimensions, and being saved from a runaway tractor by her brother – and established X-Men cinematic universe character – Colossus. This means that there are currently many different possibilities as to what the flashback in New Mutants will show.
Also full of possibility is the second casting call in the announcement, which seeks an Asian young-adult female.
“YOUNG FEMALE โ 18 to 22 years old; Asian. Scheduled to shoot in MA for one or more days between 7/20 and 8/16.”
The running theory is that this casting is for Karma, a.k.a. Xi’an Coy Manh. A mutant who has the power to take control of another’s mind, Karma is currently the only member of the original New Mutants roster to not already be cast in the film.
She also has become a fan favorite character – partially due to her being one of the first prominent lesbian characters in a mainstream comic series – further justifying why she would be included in the film.
As of right now, it’s unclear who will be cast in either of these roles, or what significance they will ultimately play in the New Mutants film. But with the film set to enter production very soon, fans can expect to find out very soon.
New Mutants is looking to begin production in early-July. The film is being directed by Josh Boone, based on a script he co-wrote with Knate Gwaltney. Longtime X-Men franchise producer Simon Kingberg will produce with Karen Rosenfelt.
New Mutants is scheduled for release on April 13, 2018.
