New X-Men TV Series Showrunner Talks 'Intimate' Storyline
The X-Men franchise is making a push into the television landscape (at long last), starting with the premiere of FX's Legion in February, and followed by a new X-Men TV series, that will be run by Burn Notice creator Matt Nix, with a pilot episode directed by Bryan Singer.
Recent details about the show have included the reveal that the story centers on two parents that discover their child is a mutant, and must go on the run from the government to protect him/her. We here at Comicbook.com (along with other fans) have already expressed concerns about creating an X-Men TV series with that kind of premise - but Matt Nix sees it as an advantage, allowing for exploration of the X-Men universe in a way unique to television.
Talking with CNet, Nix made the case that, "The movies and the comics have generally started with the X-Men and encountered the world outside from the perspective of the X-Men. This show flips that on its head, in the sense that it doesn't exclusively take place inside the world of people who are already X-Men and know that world. It's also, I'd say, a more intimate story, in the sense that's what television does well.
Regardless of the premise, Nix does make the point that there's one advantage an X-Men TV show (of any kind) has over the movies, which is, "it also explores issues surrounding mutants and what that experience is in a way that's hard to do in a two-hour movie because [a movie] needs to move very quickly and needs to get to big action. So we can explore some of the more intimate aspects of that over time. Does that make sense? I wish I could give you more..."
