It’s an idea which has had all Marvel fans clamoring for a team-up since the Guardians were introduced in their first adventure in 2014, two years after the Avengers assembling for the first time in 2012. Immediately, fans expected Marvel Studios to threw them all together for the first Avengers sequel but Age of Ultron turned out to be an Avengers-centric tale told almost entirely on Earth and with Earthlings.

Heading into Avengers: Infinity War, fans are hungry for details regarding the crossover they have been waiting on. However, they might have to wait until the fourth Avengers film which is still being billed as “Untitled” for a more meaty effort according to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn‘s description of his beloved Guardians characters’ role in Infinity War.

Gunn, who is serving as an executive producer on Avengers: Infinity War, took to Facebook for a Q&A over the weekend where he was asked about the Guardians’ role.

“I will spoil stuff about Guardians Vol. 2 but I will not spoil stuff about Infinity War but let me say that the Guardians do have an important part in Infinity War,” Gunn said. “They are supporting players. It is an Avengers movie but I think they’re really cool in it.”

With the Guardians merely being dubbed “supporting players” in Avengers: Infinity War, one has to wonder how much time Thanos will be spending on Earth and whether or not the characters will cross paths with an Avengers character ahead of the film. With Thor: Ragnarok set to trot around the cosmos in November, two movies ahead of Avengers 3, it seems possible the connection between Hulk, Thor and the Guardians can be established there as their bridge to the likes of Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and the rest of the bunch.
