The latest film from Marvel Studios will introduce two major threats in the form of Hela and the Grandmaster, classic comics villains making their first appearances on the big screen in Thor: Ragnarok. But they’ll also have some powerful lackies to help carry out their plans.

We know a lot about the Grandmaster’s aides in Valkyrie and Topaz, played by Tessa Thompson and Rachel House respectively, but we have yet to hear much about Karl Urban‘s character Skurge.
The longtime Thor villain debuts as an Asgardian in Thor: Ragnarok, filling in for Idris Elba’s Heimdall on the Bifrรถst at the beginning of the film. Urban spoke with the Los Angeles Times about his role in the new movie and what would make him betray Asgard.
“Then Hela turns up, and Skurge quickly realizes that he either has to join her or die,” said Urban. “He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, but he’s bright enough to make the right choice for him. He’s a survivalist.”
In the comic books, Skurge is the illegitimate child of an Asgardian and a Storm Giant, having much in common with Loki. He earns the name Executioner from his vicious battles and eventually becomes to be an ally of the Enchantress.
As a follower of the Enchantress, he finds himself at odds against Thor many times, finding his way to Earth. He would ally with the Masters of Evil and Doctor Doom, fighting against the Avengers, the Hulk, and other heroes.
It remains to be seen how Skurge will play into Hela’s longterm plans in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, whether she’s just using him as muscle or if he has a greater purpose in her schemes. Based on their relationship, we wouldn’t be surprised if Marvel combines elements of the Enchantress’ stories with Hela’s to create a complete and compelling narrative.
We’ll find out more when Thor: Ragnarok premieres in theaters on November 3.
