'Spider-Man 2' Working Title Revealed

The working title for Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel has been revealed as "Fall of George." Omega Underground broke the news.

The sequel's working title comes after Homecoming went into development under the name "Summer of George" — named in honor of a 1997 episode of Seinfeld.

The currently untitled Spider-Man 2 will shoot in Atlanta, Georgia, with returning Homecoming director Jon Watts and star Tom Holland.

Spider-Man's doomed love interest, Gwen Stacy, is rumored to take part in the sequel, set once again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Newer evidence suggests Gwen will be re-imagined as a foreign exchange student.

The running gag of Marvel's Spider-Man movies taking up temporary names in honor of the iconic sitcom was confirmed by co-producer Eric Carroll, who revealed a Seinfeld cast member was originally considered for a cameo.

"We pick code names that make us giggle. Around that time in L.A., there was the channel that showed the Seinfeld reruns from 10 to 11 pm, and we all started coming in the next day and talking about Seinfeld," Carroll said. "And when we had to pick a code name for this, 'Summer of George' was one [suggestion] that made us all laugh the hardest."

Marisa Tomei, who plays Peter Parker's aged-down and unusually attractive Aunt May in Homecoming, famously appeared as herself on Seinfeld, where she proved to be yet another source of frustration for perennial loser George Costanza (played by Jason Alexander).

Holland's webhead will next appear in Avengers: Infinity War, out May 4, before Spider-Man 2 hits theaters on July 5, 2019.
