Just how many villains are going to appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming?

So far, after one trailer and a handful of casting announcements, it seems pretty clear that The Vulture and The Shocker will play a pretty major role in the story — but with at least one additional person using Shocker tech in the trailer, the safe assumption seems to be that The Shocker is more than a guy — probably it’s a gang of people, possibly organized under either The Vulture or The Tinkerer (who has been rumored as an antagonist in the film for some time).

Could we see some more familiar names and faces pop up — even if perhaps they aren’t all in costume but just kind of clever name drops?

Could we see some of the deadly foes of Spider-Man turning up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

It doesn’t seem impossible.

This is something that happened quite a bit in Iron Man 3 — a number of the generic Extremis soldiers shared names with longtime Marvel Comics villains and old Iron Man foes unlikely to ever get a headlining gig as a bad guy in their own movie. (James Badge Dale’s character was named after Coldblood, for instance.)

When there was an actual comic called The Superior Foes of Spider-Man, back when Otto Octavius was wearing the costume and going by the name of the Superior Spider-Man — and it was chock full of C- and D-list Spider-Man villains like Boomerang, Overdrive, and Beetle.

These are the most likely group of candidates to team with Shocker (as they did in their own comic), so it might be worth taking a look at Nick Spencer and Steve Leiber’s series to see whether there’s anything recognizable in future trailers.
