Not every superhero comes complete with a motto, but not every hero is as lucky as Spider-Man. Over the years, Peter Parker has become closely associated with a few famous quotes, and Uncle Ben is primarily responsible for one of the series’ most iconic lines. Spider-Man: Homecoming ultimately opted to leave out the hero’sgo-to ‘responsibility’ line, but its script didn’t do so at first.

According to the film’s writers, Spider-Man: Homecoming originally housed the series’ most famous line. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein opened up to Yahoo! Movies about changes they made to the film’s script, and the pair admitted one unlikely character nodded to the iconic Spider-Man quote.

“At the end when Happy (Jon Favreau) is in the boy’s room in school we had him say, ‘Oh yeah, Tony wanted me to tell you, “With great power comesโ€ฆ something, I forgot,” Goldstein said before adding, “It was a little too meta.”

In the past, Sony’s Spider-Man films have traditionally included the line, so it isn’t surprising to see Marvel Studios distancing itself from the quote. Kevin Feige stressed the new reboot would stay away from things previously done by Sony’s previous franchises, so “With great power comes great responsibility” had to become a casualty.

If you are not familiar with the line’s origins, then you should know the Spider-Man quote has a complex history. Translations of the line can be traced all the way back to Voltaire, but its comic book usage is just as complicated. The quote appears to have originated in 1962 when the Spider-Man comic “Amazing Fantasy” was released. The line was uttered by an omniscient narrator, but the quote has since been retconned as one that first came from Uncle Ben.
