‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Passes ‘Iron Man’ At The Box Office

The student has officially surpassed the teacher at the box office. Spider-Man: Homecoming now has a larger box office total than Iron Man.

Spider-Man: Homecoming made $2.7 million over this weekend. That brings the film’s domestic total to $318.8 million, passing Iron Man‘s 2008 box office total of $318 million (these numbers are not adjusted for ticket price inflation or the cost of 3D screenings).

In fairness, Iron Man may have contributed to the success of Spider-Man: Homecoming. The film is the first Spider-Man movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Tony Stark played a significant role in it.

Spider-Man: Homecoming currently has a worldwide box office total of $737 million. The film opens in China next month.

Iron Man was the film that began the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since then, Robert Downey Jr. has played the role in two Iron Man sequels, two Avengers movies, Captain America: Civil War, and Spider-Man: Homecoming. He and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will both return for Avengers: Infinity War in 2018.
