One of the benefits of comics is that artists can create stunning characters that would never work in the real world. Unfortunately, this means that attempting to bring those characters to life is an incredibly difficult challenge, and one that Marvel Studios concept artist Andy Park knows all too well.

When speaking to CinemaBlend about the variety of characters he’s brought to life, Park revealed that of all the images he’s created, the Dark Elves from Thor: The Dark World presented the biggest challenge.

“I think the hardest one was The Dark Elves, strangely enough, from Thor: The Dark World,” Park confessed. “Like one of the easiest ones was Ant-Man from Civil War where I literally did only three paintings and it got approved. They picked one from the very first meeting.”

Park continued, “Something like The Dark Elves, it was me, Charlie Wen, and Justin Sweet, three of us, we spent six to nine months doing designs on The Dark Elves. We did over 300 designs between the three of us and yeah it took forever to get that one look that you see in the movie.”

Considering his team came up with 300 different designs, the difficulties clearly weren’t from a lack of inspiration, but rather from the decision-making process.

Of that experience, Park detailed, “It’s so subjective right? It’s not about ‘what’s the best design?’ It’s up to the director, to Kevin Feige, to the execs, and then everyone has to agree. It’s not just one person deciding, so it’s a challenge.”

The next film in the Thor franchise, Thor: Ragnarok, promises to show off some of the series’ most interesting and fascinating characters, which make us wonder which were the most difficult to create.
