‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ Star Says Movie is Accurate to the Comics

Fox’s has been making some ambitious moves with its X-Men movie universe, and it will be following Guardians of the Galaxy‘s lead by going cosmic with the next X-Men movie, X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

However, “The Dark Phoenix Saga” is one of the biggest and most sci-fi-heavy stories in X-Men lore, and fans are worried that Fox will do what it has done many times before in the franchise, by adapting “The Dark Phoenix Saga” into something that X-Men comic fans barely recognize.

However, X-Men: Dark Phoenix star Alexandra Shipp (who plays the younger version of Storm) recently spoke up to let Marvel Comics fans know that this next X-Men mvoie will be following the comics.

Comic Loyalty

Alexandra Shipp sat down with Deadline to talk about her upcoming horror-comedy Tragedy Girls, and was asked what details of Dark Phoenix she could share, now that the film has wrapped production.

According to Shipp: 

“…as a fan of X-Men, you are going to be very happy — because I’m a huge fan of X-Men and so is our director, Simon [Kinberg], who’s also writing and executive producing it. He is not letting anything go. It’s very accurate to the comics and he really gives the fans what they’ve been asking for, in my opinion. All I can say is that you’re really going to like it.”

When pressed for actual story details about Dark Phoenix, Shipp towed the usual company line of invoking the anti-spoilers clause of her contract: 

“I wish I could answer all of these questions for you. But, if I ever want to do another X-Men movie in the future I can’t tell you sh*t. (Laughs)”

X-Men Cosmic

Shipp saying that the Dark Phoenix movie is going to be accurate to the comics is a pretty big deal. The actual comic storyline has a load of fantastical elements and connective ties to other X-Men characters and stories, including the following: 

• The X-Men going into space. 
• A powerful MacGuffin (the M’Kraan Crystal) the has multidimensional power. 
• Jean Grey joining the Hellfire Club as Dark Phoenix, leading to an epic and battle with the X-Men.
• Dark Phoenix devouring a star and causing cosmic genocide.
• The arrival of the Shi’ar alien race on Earth.
• The X-Men battling the Shi’ar Imperial Guard in an epic final battle on the Blue Area of the Moon. 

That’s a lot of content to fit into one film – not to mention  a lot of new elements  to introduce into the X-Men franchise in one film. With X-Men movies already having to split their screen time between an extensive ensemble of characters, it’s easy to be skeptical about Dark Phoenix being able to pull it all off.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be in theaters on November 2, 2018. It will be preceded by Deadpool 2 on June 1, 2018, and The New Mutants on April 13, 2018.
