According to Production Weekly, X-Men: Supernova now has the working title of “Teen Spirit.” Assuming that X-Men: Supernova is the sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse, the working title may be a reference to the film being set in the 1990s, playing off of Nirvana’s 1991 era-defining grunge hit “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
While the working title likely signifies of X-Men: Supernova‘s historical setting, there may be more to it as well. X-Men: Supernova is reportedly going to begin production in Montreal in May 2017. 20th Century Fox’s The New Mutants spin-off is also reportedly going to begin filming in Montreal in late April or early May 2017. If this is true, that means both X-Men franchise films will be filming alongside one another.
This is pure speculation, but perhaps the “Teen Spirit” working title is also hinting at a crossover between the two X-Men film projects. The New Mutants is based on the first ever X-Men comic book spinoff, which followed a new team of teen mutant heroes attending Charles Xavier’s school for gifted youngsters. X-Men: Apocalypse reintroduced key X-Men characters Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, and Nightcrawler as teenagers, and they are presumed to be returning for the sequel. Perhaps this is a stretch, but it seems possible that New Mutants and X-Men: Supernova are filing together because they may share cast members. Perhaps the New Mutants will have a role to play in X-Men: Supernova.
The previous working title for X-Men: Supernova was “Dark Phoenix.” That title seemed to indicate that X-Men: Supernova would adapt “The Dark Phoenix Saga,” arguably the greatest X-Men story of all time, which was foreshadowed in X-Men: Apocalypse.
