Did The Mummy Stars Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe Feud on Set?

It is a bit surprising that Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe, two of the biggest movie stars of the past several decades, have never worked together until now.

Back in May, while doing a press junket for The Nice Guys, Crowe revealed that he was going to play the tormented Dr. Henry Jekyll in Cruise's reboot of The Mummy and joked about his relationship with the Top Gun star. "I've known Tom Cruise since 1992, or something like that," he said. "When he was married to an Australian, I was really good friends with him. But when he got divorced, I was part of the settlement package, and I went to Nicole [Kidman]."

Several days later, Crowe told ET he "always had a great deal of respect for" Cruise and was "really looking forward to being in front of a camera with him."

However, according to the Australian tabloid New Idea (via DM), there was a lot of tension on the set between Crowe and Cruise. So, what was the cause of this rumored feud?

"Russell is a loyal guy and never forgave Tom for the way he treated Nicole," a source told NI. "If they'd stayed friends, he would've felt he was betraying Nic, so he froze Tom out of his life. He is very protective of his friend and hasn't been able to stand Tom for years."

Well, when we do see them together on-screen for the first time, Crowe and Cruise's characters will engage in a knock-down, drag-out fight that took four-days to shoot. "Tom and Russell have been wanting to work together for 20 years," director Alex Kurtzman told EW in December. "They talked about various projects and it never quite came together. When this came up, they both were like: Absolutely, let's go! The physicality of shooting this scene over four days was really intense. Neither of them will take a stunt man on. They're both utterly committed: "We're doing this ourselves!" There's not gonna be any doubles. So now you're talking about: What if they injure each other? They're gonna be slamming each other into walls, into glass, into tables. You don't just want to stage a fight where they're in a contained space, punching, you want them to go around the room and destroy the place."

The cast features Tom Cruise (Jack Reacher, Top Gun), Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys, Gladiator), and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond), as well as Courtney B. Vance (The People Vs. O.J. Simpson), Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle, Peaky Blinders), Marwan Kenzari (Ben-Hur), and Jake Johnson (New Girl, Jurassic World).

Alex Kurtzman, the screenwriter and producer behind Star Trek Into Darkness and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is on board to make his directorial debut, working off of a script penned by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange).
