Rarely does a fantasy movie focus on one character. Usually, the threat is so significant that it takes an entire party of people to face it, and sometimes not even that is enough. In The Lord of the Rings, the Fellowship does a lot of the heavy lifting, but the residents of Middle-earth have no chance at beating Sauron and his armies if they’re not united. With Aragorn acting as a recruiter, the forces of Rohan, Gondor, and the Dead Men of Dunharrow come together to fight off whatever the Dark Lord throws at them, opening the door for Frodo Baggins to get the One Ring to Mount Doom.

But just because a fantasy movie can be massive in scale doesn’t mean it has to be. There are plenty of stories that keep things low-key and still find success. That should be the approach when tackling movies for these great fantasy characters, who all deserve more time in the spotlight after being part of an ensemble.
4) Jack Sparrow

While it would be easy to say that all of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies are Jack Sparrow movies, that’s not really the case. Johnny Depp’s pirate is always front and center, but the heart of the franchise belongs to Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. To get the most out of Jack, Disney should consider revisiting his early pirate days. He has so many interesting stories, and at least one of them has to be factual enough to be the basis of a solo movie.
3) Gandalf

Prime Video is working hard to explain how and why Gandalf finds himself in Middle-earth in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. However, there’s still a lot of time between that show and when the wizard shows up in the Shire for Bilbo’s 111th birthday party. A movie just about Gandalf can show what day-to-day life looks like for one of the most powerful characters in the franchise. Since he always has his head on a swivel, he’s sure to cross paths with villains nearly as formidable as Sauron.
2) Arya Stark

The Game of Thrones franchise is still going strong despite flaming out at the end of its run. House of the Dragon is making the Targaryen family more relevant than ever, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has some strong buzz around it. That’s all well and good, but there’s one story that the flagship show leaves open that’s worth exploring on the big screen. Arya Stark heads west in Game of Thrones‘ finale, wanting to explore uncharted territories. A movie could explore what it is she finds and whether her journey is worth it.
1) Inigo Montoya

Despite playing second fiddle to Westley, Inigo Montoya is the standout character of Rob Reiner’s The Princess Bride. His quest for revenge proves fruitful when he meets the six-fingered man and takes care of business, but he’s left unsure of what to do next. Westley offers Inigo the title of the Dread Pirate Roberts, which he accepts. A follow-up could explore Inigo’s adventures after he left his friends behind and feature a few cameos from familiar faces.
