For over a decade, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been defined by the steady and comforting presence of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America. He has guided the Avengers through every massive conflict, from Loki to Thanos, and acts as the emotional core of the team. His seemingly final farewell in Avengers: Endgame, where he passed on the shield to Sam Wilson, was presented as a definitive end to a legendary character. However, in the ever-expanding chaos of Marvel’s current Multiverse Sagag, a definitive end is rarely what it seems. With the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday—set for a December 2026 release—speculation has run rampant regarding whether this film will undo the “final chapter” for Evans’ Captain America from Endgame.

While some hypothesize that there may be a one-off nostalgic cameo designed to boost the film’s star power, recent whispers suggest otherwise. It seems we should not be so quick to close the book on Steve Rogers’ story.
It Is Not a Sure Thing That Chris Evans Is Done With Captain America

While many believe that a brief, multiversal cameo from Chris Evans in Avengers: Doomsday is all but certain, akin to his cameo at the end of Deadpool & Wolverine (though as Johnny Storm and not Steve Rogers), there is a very high possiblity that Steve’s story is far from done. Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus, a popular voice in the realm of MCU speculation and news, recently responded to a question on Patreon about Evans’ future as Captain America. The direct question from user Eme, “Is this really Chris Evans’ last appearance as Steve Rogers?” was met with a tantalizing answer from Perez: “Don’t count Cap out just yet.”
This short, simple phrase opens the door to a multitude of possibilities, suggesting that Marvel Studios may have a much larger plan for Evans’ character that extends beyond a single, nostalgic appearance. Adding more fuel to the theory’s fire are recent images of Chris Evans where he appears to be back in his Captain America physique.
With the current saga revolving around incursions, variants, and the breakdown of the multiverse, it would be a missed opportunity not to utilize one of the franchise’s most beloved characters in a more significant way, especially while many believe his farewell in Endgame cheapened Steve’s entire character arc. The MCU already has an established pattern of bringing back fan favorites for more than just a quick cameo, as seen with the return of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and most significantly Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
It’s plausible that this multiversal variant of Captain America could be the answer to Evan’s return, making him a key player in the battle against Doom. Regardless, whether as a new version of Steve Rogers, the original one, or an alternate timeline variant, the surprise return would not only thrill fans but also re-establish a powerful, emotional anchor in the MCU in its most ambitious saga yet. The story of Captain America, it seems, may be far from over.
