Asked about playing Donald J. Trump in Donald Trump’s The Art of the Deal: The Movie, a parody look at Trump’s 1987 autobiographical book, Depp recalled his starring in the 50-minute movie was prompted by Funny or Die co-founder Adam McKay:
Depp: Adam McKay, who I admire greatly and who’s one of the funniest humans alive, we had a meeting. We’re sitting there talking. He said, ‘How would you like to do a feature film in four days?’ And I went, ‘I like that idea.’ And then he said, ‘How would you like to play Donald Trump?’ And I loved that idea. I didn’t care if I knew if I was capable or not. I wanted to try. So I did my bit as Donald Trump. [Pause] You don’t want to be Donald Trump.
Norton: Because the way he speaks is very specific.
Depp: Yeah.
Jack Whitehall: Were you telling all the Mexicans to get off set?
Depp: [As Trump] I told them to build me that wall. I want a sensational wall. A fabulous wall. I don’t remember what the question was, but it doesn’t matter ’cause I’m not gonna answer it anyway.
The satirical movie preceded Donald Trump‘s election as the 45th President of the United States in November 2016.
Depp was at the center of backlash earlier this summer when he made a joke about assassinating Donald Trump at Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, England. “When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” Depp said. “I want to clarify, I’m not an actor, I lie for a living.” Though it wasn’t captured in the video, it was reported by the Associated Press that Depp then added it’s “been a while, and maybe it’s time.”
“I apologize for the bad joke I attempted last night in poor taste about President Trump,” the actor said in a statement. “It did not come out as intended, and I intended no malice. I was only trying to amuse, not to harm anyone.”
Depp stars as Edward Ratchett in crime mystery Murder on the Orient Express, now playing.
