With its release only weeks away, the young, up-and-coming cast of Power Rangers has begun doing press for the highly-anticipated film. And while participating in the Toronto press junket on Thursday, Ludi Lin (Zack/Black Ranger), Dacre Montgomery (Jason Scott/Red Ranger), and Naomi Scott (Kimberly Hart/Pink Ranger) were happily surprised when Amy Jo Johnson walked into the room to interview them next.
Johnson was the first actress to portray to Kimberly Hart/Pink Ranger, appearing in the first three seasons of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series and two films based on the series: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995) and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie (1997).
Johnson greeted them with a soft "hi," and Lin looked in the her direction and immediately recognized Johnson. "Oh my god," he said with a look of awe on his face. "Hi."
Scott and Montgomery soon recognized her as well and all three stood up and gave Johnson a warm hug and complimented the 46-year-old actress on her youthful appearance.
Johnson began the interview by asking them if the new film will have the same positive impact on young children that the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series did. "The other day a five-year-old kid came to visit me at this restaurant and his mom was telling me that for a whole year now since he knew there was a new Power Rangers movie that he's been telling his friends at school about the Power Rangers," Lin explained to her. "And for me, that's the whole point...to remind the OG fans why they love the Power Rangers — teamwork and positive message that it brings. But also to instill that in the younger generation and have them think that working together and overcoming challenges together is a fun thing, positive thing to do."
Saban's Power Rangers follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove - and the world - is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it's too late, band together as the Power Rangers.
Saban's Power Rangers stars Dacre Montgomery as Jason Lee Scott/the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler as Billy Cranston/the Blue Ranger, Becky G as Trini Kwan/the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin as Zack Taylor/the Black Ranger, Naomi Scott as Kimberly Hart/the Pink Ranger, Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, Bill Hader as Alpha 5, and Bryan Cranston as Zordon.
