During a recent interview to promote Alien: Covenant, director Ridley Scott was asked about the chances of Neill Blomkamp getting to make Alien 5, which would be a direct sequel to Aliens that would wipe away the glaring mistakes — such as killing off Rebecca “Newt” Jorden (Carrie Henn) and Corporal Hicks (Michael Biehn) while they were still in cryo-sleep — made in Alien 3.

“I think [Blomkamp’s film] will never see the light…,” Scott told the French site Allocine (translated to English by AVP Galaxy). “There was never a scenario, just an idea that evolved into a pitch of ten pages. I had to participate as a producer but it did not go any further because [20th Century] Fox decided that [they] did not want to do it. I had already done Prometheus and worked on Covenant.”

Scott’s dismissive tone isn’t all that surprising since he has never voiced any support for Blomkamp’s project, even though much of the franchise’s fanbase showed more interest and excitement for it than the Prometheus and its soon-to-be released follow-up.

But what is surprising is that Scott claims that Blomkamp only put together a ten-page pitch. Last July, during the Aliens: 30th Anniversary panel at San Diego Comic-Con, both Sigourney Weaver and Aliens director, James Cameron, said that they read Blomkamp’s script. Cameron went as far as to say it’s “a very strong script,” and “works gangbusters.” Weaver called it an “incredible script.” Of course, it is possible that both of them are referring to the ten-page pitch as a script.

Director Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

The cast features Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, and Benjamin Rigby.

Alien: Covenant opens in theaters on May 19, 2017.
