Team Captain America’s character posters are out, proclaiming their allegiance to Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War. Now the actors who play those heroes loyal to Rogers are explaining what led them to choose Cap’s side.

“He respects and admires Cap because Cap earned his rank as opposed to sitting in an office and just delegating orders,” Anthony Mackie tells USA Today, who plays the Falcon. Falcon became close with Captain America during the course of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now an Avenger himself, Sam Wilson seems to have little respect for Tony Stark’s economic successes.
As for Hawkeye, Jeremy Renner says his consideration was primarily about practicality and lifestyle. “Cap was the first guy who called. Let’s just get the job done so I can get home to the family.”
Scarlet Witch, who debuted in Avengers: Age of Ultron, is also on Cap’s side, though actress Elizabeth Olsen hints that her loyalties may be tested, saying Wanda is “figuring out her place and finding a family,” but “she does have a few changes of points of view in this film.”
Finally, there’s Cap’s best friend, Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. the Winter Soldier. Formerly a brainwashed assassin for Hydra, Barnes is now a wanted man, and a catalyst for the conflict between Stark and Rogers.
“Cap is his only shot at survival,” says actor Sebastian Stan. “It’s not like everyone’s high-fiving before going to war. There are still tensions.”
Chris Evans, who plays Captain America himself, adds, “Nobody’s wrong here. No one’s promoting evil. No one’s the bad guy. We just have different ways of being the good guy and that can get fiery.”
