More than 40 years have passed since the world was first introduced to Nick Castle as the towering, stalking Michael Myers and Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode. John Carpenter’s 1978 classic Halloween sparked one of the most iconic slasher franchises to date. Now spanning a total of 13 films, the franchise has logged a mix of major highs and lows. While the most recent installment, 2022’s Halloween Ends, proved to be the most divisive to date, one Halloween sequel is by far a standout in the franchise, and it’s streaming for free just ahead of the titular holiday itself.

Amid a rush of great horror titles that arrived on September 1st, Tubi began streaming Halloween (2018). Serving as the first installment in director David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy and the 11th installment in the Halloween franchise, the movie retcons the franchise to bring things back to the story of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. The film is a direct sequel to Carpenter’s 1978 classic and picks up 40 years after that fateful Halloween night, with a traumatized Laurie once again coming face-to-face with an escaped Michael as he hunts her and her family down, but unlike last time, Laurie is prepared for the showdown.
Why You Should Watch Halloween (2018)
Not every Halloween sequel is created equally, and it’s not a stretch to say that some films in the franchise have been massive flops. But Halloween (2018) is a faithful sequel to the original 1978 film that is not only a standout in the franchise but also one of the best comebacks of a horror franchise. With a 79% “Certified Fresh” critics score and a 72% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is the second-highest-rated film in the franchise after the original Halloween in both metrics, as well as the highest-rated movie in both regards in Green’s trilogy.
The movie is authentic and nostalgic in its return to form, ignoring previous sequels to connect the film directly back to the original movie and its plot, and the return of two franchise icons, with Jamie Lee Curtis returning to the franchise for the first time since Halloween: Resurrection (2002) and Nick Castle putting on Michael’s iconic mask for the first time since 1978. The film also saw Carpenter return to compose the score alongside Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies, the film’s soundscape helping to build suspense. With Michael returning to the screen just as terrifyingly as he did in the first film, plenty of absolutely brutal kills, and a plot that expanded the story while also paying homage to the 1978 classic, Halloween (2018) is a must-watch for any fan of the franchise.
