Even most fans who were on board with Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. from the beginning tend to admit the show got significantly better towards the end of its first season. It's hard to deny that the synergy between the series and Marvel's second Captain America film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, helped to add a tension to the series that was lacking in earlier episodes.

ABC President Paul Lee, speaking to Zap2It during a summer TV press tour, said that fans should expect the synergy between Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Marvel Studios films to continue into Season 2.

"I can't be specific about it, but what I can say is we had such a strong set of stories through that huge finale at the end," Lee said. "That triggered up a whole load of story lines we're reading at the moment, and I have to say I'm loving those scripts."

Captain America: The Winter Soldier introduced a new wrinkle to the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it revealed that S.H.I.E.L.D. had been infiltrated by the terrorist organization called Hydra. This drastically altered the status quo for the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., as they lost the sizable support web the organization offered and found themselves on their own in a world that no longer trusts them. In the series finale, Nick Fury tasked Agent Phil Coulson with rebuilding the organization.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 will premiere Tuesday, September 23 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
