It's been a fairly astonishing run at the box office for R-rated comic book adaptation Deadpool, and the hits just keep on coming.

After the close of yesterday's box office, Deadpool surpassed X-Men: Days of Future Past to become the highest-grossing X-Men film of all time at the global box office.

The film made $3.5 million this weekend for a total of $749 million all time globally. It needed to pass $747.8 million to top the franchise.

It was already -- by a wide margin -- the highest-grossing X-Men film at the domestic box office, surpassing X-Men: The Last Stand (and in so doing, thrilling nearly every X-fan on the planet who can't help but wonder how their least favorite movie made so much money).

With the film heading to DVD and Blu-ray in early May, it's likely it will start to become available via streaming services later this month. It's possible the movie could continue to be a force at the box office (albeit an admittedly small one) right up to that point.

Based upon Marvel Comics' most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
