This week, Gillette hosted an event at the World Shaving Headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts. They flew ComicBook.com, along with a select few media outlets from all over the world, to the top secret event to share the announcement of their partnership with Stark Industries.
As soon as we arrived at the Gillette World Shaving Headquarters, the Marvel presence was crystal clear. This was now Tony Stark's building. The Audi's parked outside had signs behind them, indicating they were reserved for Tony Stark and Pepper Potts. If that wasn't enough, below the Gillette World Shaving Headquarters building was a new sign: Stark Industries. Once inside, Stark Industries security requested a finger print scan in order to gain entry. The event was top notch- packed with Iron Man and Avengers Easter eggs all over that any fan would love to get their hands on.
Most of the event was a complete secret until the day of. Nobody from Gillette would confirm or deny any expectations we had for what was coming. We were left completely in the dark on what to expect, what or who we might see, and how the day would go in general. The Iron Man Mark Mark XLII suit from Iron Man 3 was standing just inside the doors, lit up, greeting us. Before the event began, we had a chance to look around at all of the real Marvel Studios movie props Gillette gathered for us to lust over.
Just outside where the event took place, Gillette had some props set up that any Marvel comics or movie fan would adore. The Captain America shield rested above a lit up Iron Man mask and a Mjolnir! The Mjolnir was really heavy, too! Unless of course, you are worthy, which us mere mortals certainly are not. The best of it was how excited and relaxed both attendees and Gillette employees were. No one had a problem with people snapping photos, touching, or at times even playing with some of the props.
Then, of course, is the reason we were invited to Boston for the Stark Industries take off. Charlie Pierce introduced us to what it would look like if Iron Man needed to shave during an awesome, but sadly fake, commercial for the newest Gillette razors.
The line included a razor themed for each Avenger. There is the Gillette Thunder, Ultra Strike, Repulsor 1, and Gamma XL. Each has it's very own feature themed to match its corresponding Avenger's super power. Unfortunately, the Repulsor 1 firing repulsor rays to eliminate hair, the Ultra Strike firing a Vibranium shield to trim hairs up to 87 times over in one launch, or the Thunder forcing hairs to meet their demise through micro electric bolts, are not actually happening. However! Gillette and Stark Industries teamed up to provide the best shave possible with the Gillete Fusion with Flexball technology.
The real surprise came at the end of the demonstration. A Stark Industries scientist introduced each individual Avengers razor, culminating with the Hulk themed "Gamma XL." They first showed the shaving device in it's normal form, which looks like a typical Gillette razor with Hulk themed colors, but the biggest surprise of the day came when the angry form of the Gamma XL took to the stage (it doesn't like missing a hair!). Marvel master mind himself, Stan Lee, brought out the angry, gigantic razor!
Lee was enthusiastic about the Gillette and Stark Industries team up. He and Pierce proudly presented the Gamma XL razor before the event concluded and we were offered a tour of the Gillette factory.
Before heading out, though, Gillette hooked us up with an exclusive interview Stan Lee which we will be sharing later today.
The fun didn't end in Boston. When I got home, there was one last surprise waiting at my doorstep. Inside of a package from Gillette, was a brief case that the folks at Gillette provided the code for. Inside that case- the prototype Stark Industries shaving tools, a Gillette Fusion razor with Flexball technology, some shaving cream, and the blue prints for each of the Avengers themed prototypes.
