Some fans may have found it a bit odd when Jennifer Lawrence, upon having won her Golden Globe for The Silver Linings Playbook earlier this week, held up the statuette and declared, "I beat Meryl," a reference to Meryl Streep, who was also nominated. In fact, we don't have to say "may." There was plenty of anger on the Internet shortly after that telecast went wide, accusing her of disrespecting the veteran actress and essentially bad sportsmanship. However, that anger may have been misplaced. Lawrence was quoting The First Wives Club, in which an Academy Award is brandished and the character holding it says, "It says, 'I beat Meryl,'" a reference to Streep's prodigious output and the fact that she's so widely beloved that anytime she doesn't win an award she's nominated for, it's noteworthy. Consider this a public service, since the vast majority of fans who tuned in to see "that girl from The Hunger Games" probably had no idea what that was all about.
