Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Sandman Movie To Be Written By Eric Heisserer

According to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Eric Heisserer has been hired by New Line to work on the feature film adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Sandman, that has Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises) on board to direct and star.

Heisserer's writing credits include Final Destination 5, The Conjuring 2, as well as the remakes ofA Nightmare on Elm Street and The Thing.

Just over two years ago, British screenwriter Jack Thorne (A Long Way Down) was hired to work on a Sandman script, based on a treatment written by David Goyer.

The Sandman was a series that helped define Vertigo Comics. Told by Gaiman and a long list of comics' best artists of the era, the series followed Morpheus, the embodiment of Dream, as he navigated his place in the universe and his relationships, both to the mortal world and to his family of fellow conceptual personifications, the Endless.

It took Gaiman 75 issues to complete his serialized story. Some have argued that the story is un-filmable, but it seems Levitt and Goyer are determined to try.

It is reported that New Line hopes The Sandman story can be filmed as a trilogy.
