Microsoft has registered a trademark for Battletoads, according to documentation discovered by NeoGAF (via IGN).

The document is dated for November 5 and is for "game software." No further information is available at this time.

For those unfamiliar, Battletoads is a notoriously difficult retro-style sidescrolling beat'em up video game, in which the players take control of Rash, Zitz, and Pimple – anthropomorphic toads infused with '90s cool.

The game was developed by Rare, which is now a subsidiary of Microsoft. Last year, as part of the Xbox One console launch, Microsoft revived another classic Rare title, Killer Instinct, and gave the game away for free.

Fans should keep their excitement in check, however. Just last week, a trademark registration for Fallout: Shadow Over Boston was proven to be a hoax, and this may turn out to be the same.

For their part, a spokesperson from Microsoft provided IGN with a comment on the trademark, saying "Microsoft often acquires various trademarks as part of its ongoing business strategy, but beyond that we have no comment."
