Believe it! Masashi Kishimoto may have brought the Naruto manga to an end, but the story still lives on with fans all over the world. The beloved mangaka was introduced to fans thanks to Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999. The series wrapped in 2014, but Naruto has stuck around through anime series, feature films, and video games. Now, the creator is teasing fans that he’s got some major announcements about the franchise coming tomorrow, so fans better brace themselves.
Tomorrow, the Shonen Jump Festival will kick-off in Japan, and the event will house a panel dedicated to Naruto. Thanks to Twitter, a fan shared shared a note from the festival regarding the event. The translated message says that Kishimoto will appear at the super-stage ‘Naruto & Boruto’ tomorrow, December 17. It also says the mangaka will have not one but three surprise announcements for fans.
Of course, fans are already speculating what the announcement could be. Many fans are hoping Kishimoto will confirm a spin-off anime for Naruto. Shortly after its manga ended, Naruto was carried on thanks to a manga standalone about a young ninja named Boruto. The second-generation character was the son of Naruto Uzumaki, and the manga tie-in followed the boys adventures with his classmates and father’s peers. Characters like Sakura Haruno, Sasuke Uchiha, and Hatake Kakashi were all featured in the limited run, and fans want to see Boruto star in an anime of its own.
So far, Boruto has been adapted into various anime projects, but none have been full-length series. A film titled Boruto: The Naruto Movie was released back in 2015, and the legacy protagonist has been gifted with a few animated specials. However, fans wants a full series, and the franchise has the fanbase to support a spin-off.
Some ambitious fans are predicting Kishimoto will announced plans for a full-length Boruto standalone series. The anime would act as a bridge between Naruto Shippuden as the long-running series is now winding down. There’s no telling when a Boruto series might get released, but there will likely be a year’s wait at least.
Since Kishimoto is expected to make more than one announcement, fans are also curious as to whether the creator may announce a new movie. The Naruto franchise has more than 10 films to its name, and it has been more than a year since the last feature was released. The mangaka may also confirm the finale date for Naruto Shippuden at the event as well. The anime is currently airing a slew of aside gaiden stories which delve into the pasts of Sasuke, Kakashi, Naruto, and more.
