We're barely past opening weekend for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and already the rumor mill is turning with potential plot points for the sequel.

Screen Rant is positing that the second film in the rebooted film franchise may feature the villain Krang and Dimension X. The theory is largely based on the website's interview with director Jonathan Liebesman and producers Bradley Fuller and Andrew Form, in which Liebesman said he would be totally be up for a science fiction heavy version of the Turtles, and Fuller and Form implied that some of that was present in early drafts of the script for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but was cut to keep the story tight.

For those who don't know, Krang is a villainous alien from Dimension X who debuted in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon series. Later versions of the character were modified to make him a member of the Ultrom race. The Ultrom's are revealed, as far back as the original Turtles comic book series, to be the force behind TCRI, the company that created the mutagen that mutated the Turtles and Master Splinter.

The TCRI aspect of the Turtles origins is still present in the latest film, and there were early rumors of the Turtles having an alien origin. In 2012's TMNT, the gateway portal to Dimension X is actually in the TCRI building.

What ends up happening, in previous Turtles storylines, is that the Turtles go through that portal and find themselves on the hellish plane of Dimension X and travelling to other planets in the galaxy.

If this is the direction the Liebesman wants to go, it sounds like the first film has already laid down the groundwork.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is now playing in theaters.
