In January, it was announced that Con Air director Simon West will tackle a remake of The Blob, which originally hit the silver screen in 1958 and starred Steve McQueen.

In a recent interview, West explains his new sci-fi take on the creature feature. Though, he begins by revealing that this one just be a creature terrorizing a small town like in the previous films. "Yeah, it's definitely going to be on a much bigger canvas than the originals, which were much more small, niche genre horror movies," West told Den of Geek. "My version of The Blob's going to be more sci-fi."

In the 1958 film The Blob was an alien amoeba that oozed out of a meteorite crater and in the 1988 remake it was a biological weapon created by the military. Of course, West has plans to update The Blob's backstory so that it can be more "sophisticated," but does reveal that the gelatinous juggernaut will be an alien like he was in the original. "The blob itself will be more sophisticated, more along the lines of Alien and Predator and things like that - much more science-based, the way Jurassic Park made you believe you could bring back dinosaurs with a bit of DNA from a mosquito," West explained. "This will be much more explained on where the blob comes from and how it works. It'll be a much more sophisticated creature - because it is a monster movie rather than a horror in that sense. This thing's come from another planet, and also, we don't know how many there are."

Principal photography for The Blob is expected to begin this summer.
