Mockingjay Part 1, the latest installment in The Hunger Games series, dominated the Friday box office with  $55 million debut, Box Office Mojo reports.

Disney's Big Hero 6 came in at a distant second with $4.5 million. Dumb and Dumber To  ($4.3 million), Interstellar ($4.2 million) and Gone Girl ($800,000) round out the top five.

Tracking services indicate that Mockingjay Pt. 1 is set to debut at the box office in the preliminary $130 million range. If this transpires, The Hunger Games sequel will have the highest weekend debut of the year. After Friday's performance, that is a very strong possibility.

The current 2014 record-holder for highest opening debut is Transformers: Age of Extinction at $100 million.

In Mockingjay pt. 1, Jennifer Lawrence returns as Katniss Everdeen and finds herself in District 13 after she destroys the games. Under the leadership of President Coin and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss fights to save Peeta and a nation moved by her courage.
