Eugene Victor Tooms is one of the most infamous of the X-Files freak-of-the-week villains, if for no reason other than he came back for a second helping in spite of not being a significant part of the overarching mythology of the series. Few characters did that, and those who did were generally quite memorable, Tooms included. Appearing in the episodes "Squeeze" and "Tooms," the character was also referenced a number of times after that, including in a newspaper clipping tacked to the wall in Agent Mulder's office. In his second appearance, Tooms was killed when he squeezed into a moving escalator.

Tooms was a mutant, able to squeeze into unbelievably small places and to age at an extremely slow rate as a result of a slow metabolic rate. He committed murders and ate the livers of his victims in order to sustain himself, hibernating for years at a time and so staying off the radar of law enforcement. So, if he's dead...what's his name doing on a variant cover of The X-Files Season 10 #1 from IDW Publishing, due out in June to continue the story as left off years go when the long-running TV series was cancelled? These covers, as a note, were uploaded by series writer Joe Harris, who just received his first batch of X-Files comp copies. It could be that Tooms is merely being referenced (either in the issue or even just on the cover), rather than resurrected; it seems that might be what's in the cards for The Lone Gunmen in the series' second issue. Then again, it appears as though the Cigarette Smoking Man is back from the apparent dead in #3, so anything goes with this comic.
