Ben Affleck’s The Accountant Tops Opening Weekend Box Office

Ben Affleck has returned to the top of the box office in his latest film, The Accountant, which will earn approximately $25 million across 3,222 locations in North America in its opening weekend.

On Friday, combined with early screenings on Thursday night, The Accountant earned $9.1 million.

The Accountant carries a modest budget of $40 million. The Accountant is already exceeding expectations, having been projected for an opening weekend box office high of $20 million.

ComicBook.com’s own Kofi Outlaw gave The Accountant a positive review, saying, “The Accountant is a rare thing to see these days: a character-driven story that’s worth the time and investment to watch.”

The Accountant nearly doubled the performance if its closest opening weekend competitor, concert movie Kevin Hart: What Now?, which will earn $12.4 million across 2,568 locations. Kevin Hart: What Now? Earned $4.8 million on Friday.

Max Steel, a sci-fi film adaptation of the superhero action figure, will score an anemic $2 million opening weekend over 2,034 screens, after earning a paltry $600,000 on Friday.

Last week’s box office winner, The Girl on the Train, should finish just behind The Accountant, with $24.5 million over its second weekend.

In The Accountant, Christian Wolff is a mathematics savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Using a small-town CPA office as a cover, he makes his living as a freelance accountant for dangerous criminal organizations. With a Treasury agent (J.K. Simmons) hot on his heels, Christian takes on a state-of-the-art robotics company as a legitimate client. As Wolff gets closer to the truth about a discrepancy that involves millions of dollars, the body count starts to rise.
