The ’80s gave us great anthology horror films like Creepshow, Nightmares, and Twilight Zone: The Movie. Anthologies allow many different directors to give us tales of horror that might not be viable for a feature film, while marketing materials can emphasize the accomplishments of the varied directors. The upcoming horror anthology XX just released its first clip, which makes us hope the rest of the film is as wild as what we’re seeing here.

The clip comes from the “Don’t Fall” segment, which was directed by Roxanne Benjamin. The director is no stranger to anthology films, as she’s previously directed a segment for the anthology film Southbound and produced the V/H/S films.

The more successful anthology films give the viewer some sort of commonality between all the segments, like V/H/S all being in the found footage format and Trick ‘r Treat featuring stories that all take place on Halloween.
The unifying theme amongst all the segments in XX is that they’re all directed by women, both from horror veterans and horror first-timers. In addition to Benjamin, the film features segments by Karyn Kusama (The Invitation, Jennifer’s Body), Jovanka Vuckovic (The Caged Bird), Annie Clark (musician known as “St. Vincent”), and Sofia Carrillo (La Casa Triste).
In addition to giving audiences a variety of perspectives and stories, another bonus is that if one segment might not be up your alley, you only have to put up with it for a fraction of the time of a bad feature-length movie, so the whole experience isn’t soured by one story you’re not as interested in.
