Venerable entertainment industry trade Variety reports that Eli Roth and Jim Carrey will join forces to bring Aleister Arcane to the screen.

The comic, written by Steven Niles and featuring art by Breehn Burns, was first published in 2004 by IDW Publishing. Screenwriter Jon Croker will adapt it for the screen.

This isn't Niles's first foray into having his work adapted, of course; among a handful of other things, his 30 Days of Night creator-owned series has turned into a wide-reaching horror franchise, with movies, TV and more.

In the comic, Aleister Green loves playing late night TV horror host Aleister Arcane in his hometown of Jackson, OK...at least, until Jackson's establishment forces him off the air and into unhappy retirement, and an early grave. But Aleister has left a little gift behind — will Jackson ever be the same?

There are some fun parallels and Easter eggs to characters like the Cryptkeeper, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, and other TV horror emcees in the story.

Per Variety, the movie's story centers on a group of children who befriend a bitter old man ruined and shunned by their parents. After his death, only they have the power to thwart the curse he has laid upon their town.

The rights to Aleister Arcane were optioned once before -- in 2004, shortly after the series launched -- but Paramount failed to make a movie and they lapsed.

Roth, of Cabin Fever and Hostel fame, would be taking a bit of a lighter tone with a movie like this, given that it has moments of levity in the comic.
