It’s always a funny thing to learn about what could’ve been or almost was when it comes to our favorite movies – and today brings us one such piece of trivia to chew on and think about.

Movie fans are, by now, all too familiar with Mel Gibson‘s 1995 multi-Oscar-winning film, Braveheart. What they may not know, is that Mel Gibson wasn’t always the clear choice to play Scottish rebel William Wallace; in fact, another high-profile actor was once in the running to play Wallace: none other than Brad Pitt.

THR actually had a story detailing how Gibson went off the reservation during an early budget meeting for Braveheart, taking an ashtray and throwing it through a wall. While that anecdote was entertaining enough, there was a small aside to the story, which is actually a pretty big deal:

“Eventually, Gibson agreed to direct and, after toying with the idea of having Brad Pitt star, he reluctantly committed to take the title role in the real-life story of the Scottish rebel who battles against England…”
