Earlier this week, Paramount made some drastic changes to their 2017 release slate, including the complete cancellation of the planned Friday the 13th reboot and pulling World War Z 2 from its June release date without rescheduling. Considering the film had no director, it was tough to expect the film to come out in six months, but now that there’s no release date, the film can be completely reworked. With the film in need of a director, frequent Brad Pitt collaborator has expressed his interest in potentially helming the zombie epic.
J.A. Bayona was originally intend to direct the zombie sequel, but backed out to direct A Monster Calls. Sources close to David Fincher say the filmmaker is “very creatively interested in directing the movie” and would go a different route than the expensive original film.

The first film gained a reputation as being one of the more expensive sci-fi thrillers in recent years, as multiple reshoots and delays in creative direction took its toll on the film. Rather than a film on the same scale of the first film, Fincher was more interested in making a movie about a man traveling a zombie-infested world to try to relocate his family.
Considering Fincher’s track record, relationship with Pitt, and willingness to make it for less money, you’d think this would be a surefire direction for Paramount to go, but they’ve yet to weigh in.
From the sounds of it, were Fincher to join the project, the film would be much more visually and thematically similar to something like The Road, with a man traveling through wasteland after wasteland while avoiding the terrifying ghoul.
Considering his films are typically more grounded in reality, like The Social Network, Panic Room, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, delving back into something more fantastical sounds pretty exciting for Fincher fans.
