Disney must be incredibly happy with the performance of its new animated film Moana, as the film takes 1st place again in its second week at the box office.
Moana took in $6.5 million on Friday at 3,875 locations, which puts it on pace for a $30.3 million dollar weekend. That puts it right under $100 million domestically, but it should surpass that number after Saturday’s totals are counted (via Deadline). If it stays on track, it would net around $121 million total for its second week stateside. This performance puts it in the same territory as Disney’s Frozen, as it is only $1.3 million short of that film’s second-weekend number.

The other big tentpole flick is J.K. Rowlings Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, which adds $5 million to its box office total, and is on track for a $17.2 million weekend. The film is in its third week and will be around $182 million by the end of the weekend. It’s still behind the first Harry Potter installment by 17%, but it’s received positive reviews across the board and should continue to have decent legs.
Allied comes in at #3 with $2.2 million and only looks to be around $7.7 million by weekend’s end. The film has only amassed about $29.6 million thus far. Doctor Strange is in its fifth week and added another $1.8 million to its domestic total, which will sit around $215 million once the numbers are tallied. Arrival rounds out the top five with a $2 million Friday and is on track to have $72.4 million domestically once the weekend concludes.
Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped โ and no one knows why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. The film stars Dwayne Johnson (HBO’s “Ballers,” “Central Intelligence”) as the demigod Maui and newcomer Auli’i Cravalho voices the title character, Moana. The cast also includes Jemaine Clement (“What We Do in the Shadows,” Flight of the Conchords) as Tamatoa, Rachel House (“Whale Rider,” “Hunt for the Wilderpeople”) as Gramma Tala, Temuera Morrison (“Star Wars: Episode II โ Attack of the Clones,” “Six Days, Seven Nights”) as Moana’s father, Chief Tui.
