HBO has reportedly cast Danish actor Pilou Asbæk as Euron Greyjoy in Season 6 of Game of Thrones. The report comes from fan site Watchers on the Wall, and claims that Asbæk was spotted filming a scene with other cast members at Ballintoy Harbour in Northern Ireland.
HBO has refused to confirm any casting rumors for the coming season.
Asbæk starred in the Danish series Borgen, appeared on The Borgias as Paolo Orsini, and will play Pontius Pilate in the upcoming Ben-Hur remake.
We'll get into more details about Euron and the scene Asbæk was reportedly seen filming, but beware of SPOILERS.
Euron "Crow's Eye" Greyjoy is Lord Balon Greyjoy's eldest younger brother. He captain's the Silence, a ship whose entire crew has had their tongues ripped out.
It seems that the Greyjoy subplot that was left by the wayside last season is picking up again in Season 6. Euron appears in the fourth book in the series, A Feast for Crows, after Lord Balon Greyjoy dies. Balon is rumored to finally perish in Season 6, which leads to the scene Asbæk was supposedly caught filming.
The scene being filmed may have been the Kingsmoot that takes place after Balon's death. Yara was there, as was a crowd of spectators who cheered for Euron. This all fits into the context of the Kingsmoot. There was also a character who appeared to be the Drowned Priest Aeron, but no word on the actor playing him. The only thing missing from the scene was Victarion Greyjoy.
Kingsmoots are declared, as you might have guessed, to name a new king when an old one has fallen. Aeron calls the Kingsmoot in an attempt to prevent Euron from taking the Seastone Chair and civil war breaking out amongst the Ironborn. Unfortunately for Aeron, the Ironborn choose Euron as king anyway.0comments
Of course, if the Ironborn were to find out that Balon's trueborn son, Theon, were still alive, that would change everything…
Game of Thrones Season 6 will air on HBO in 2016.
