This year, Valentine’s Day falls on a weekday, meaning rather than going out for a wild and crazy night, many Valentine’s dates will be taking place in the comfort of someone’s home. We have no doubt that the popular slogan will be “Hulu and Relax” or “Amazon Prime and Take It Easy Time” will be sent through text messages and DMs just for the sake of efficiency.

There are plenty of romantic films you could watch, or, if you and your date prefer the scarier things in life, why not opt for a horror film? You could go with virtually any scary movie that could cause your date to jump and hold you tight, but you have a lot of options if you want a horror movie with some genuine romantic themes in them to help set the mood.

Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Prior to Bride of Frankenstein, most cinematic monsters were male, but this story showed that any gender was capable of being brought back to life for science! Prior to this movie, Frankenstein’s monster had a bad reputation for his run-ins with girls, as the last one he met, he tossed into a river. Bride of Frankenstein should give hope to everyone out there that, even if you are a horrific, reanimated corpse, you might still find love.

The Vampire Lovers (1970)
Hammer Film Productions are known for telling tales of classic horror monsters with a gothically romantic view, generally using the most beautiful actresses around. If you’re going to combine vampires with gothic romance and beautiful women, it doesn’t get much better than The Vampire Lovers. The film features a beautiful vampire (Ingrid Pitt) seducing young women to join her in her undead adventures, no matter what the cost. The sets are lavish, the women are gorgeous, and stars one of Hammer’s finest actors, Peter Cushing.

Kiss of the Damned (2013)
In the tradition of Hammer films, Kiss of the Damned also features beautiful people, incredible sets, and a tale of vampires. With a more modern twist on the formula, the film is more violent than your average Hammer film and incorporates more modern musical cues and editing styles. In this films, vampires merely try to exist off the radar of humans, preferring to keep to themselves than revel in bloodshed. Starring Milo Ventimiglia and Josephine de la Baume, this film is sexy enough to get even the undead’s hearts pumping.

Stoker (2013)
India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska) is a teenager trying to figure out her place in life after the sudden passing of her father. Her mother (Nicole Kidman) allows her brother-in-law (Matthew Goode) to stay at the home, but it’s possible he is attempting to seduce both women in the home. Oh yeah, and India is developing violent tendencies that tie closely into her sexual drive. Stoker might not be for everyone, but Park Chan-wook’s direction is incredibly seductive, matched only by the performances of the three stars.

Let the Right One In (2008)
Vampires, much like romance, will never die, which is why we see the two go together so well. Instead of sexy vampires lusting after one another, Let the Right One In stars two kids who live in the same apartment complex, with one of them being a vampire. The film focuses more on the feelings of what it’s like to have a crush and feelings of friendship instead of the more adult themes explored in other vampire films, but is just about as beautiful of a horror film as they come.

My Bloody Valentine (1981)
If you’re only going to watch one horror movie on Valentine’s Day that ties directly into Valentine’s Day, you can’t go wrong with the Canadian slasher My Bloody Valentine. The plot doesn’t tie into Valentine’s Day all that much, other than it features a group of coeds getting murdered by a coal miner when they wander away from a party thrown in the holiday’s honor, but that’s good enough to make it a holiday horror classic!

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton star as two vampires who have been in love for decades, despite being separated by continents. When Hiddleston’s character begins to question the futility of his existence, Swinton reminds him that love and music are enough reasons to stick around, even if the rest of the world has been corrupted by the “zombies” of humanity. The stars make the perfect romantic duo and the film features fantastic music, which is almost as good as relaxing to some romantic music yourselves.

Spring (2014)
Equal parts H.P. Lovecraft and Richard Linklater, Spring shows a young man (Lou Taylor Pucci) and who meets a beautiful woman (Nadia Hilker) while in Italy, but she’s hiding a terrible secret. As the two come to terms with what they must sacrifice for love, Spring reminds us all the costs of falling head over heels for someone we thought we knew and the risks and rewards that come along with it.

Warm Bodies (2013)
If you prefer your romantic horror movies to be a little lighter, Warm Bodies leans into the comedic elements of being in love with a zombie instead of why that’s so horrifying. Many types of horror movies that incorporate romantic elements default to choosing vampires as their monster of choice, so Warm Bodies deserves a spot on the list for the mere fact that they someone made a zombie look charming enough that someone could fall in love with it. Also, the movie is rated PG-13, which means it’s tame enough to allow teens to enjoy.

Crimson Peak (2015)
Much like Kiss of the Damned harkened back to Hammer vampire films of the past, Crimson Peak harkens back to a time when romantic stories also featured terrifying ghosts. Starring Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska (third movie on the list), and Tom Hiddleston (second movie on the list), this supernatural tale of marrying women for their fortunes and vengeful spirits, all from the mastermind Guillermo Del Toro, who brings his terrifyingly imaginative ideas to the beautiful film.

Honeymoon (2014)
When a young couple, played by Rose Leslie and Harry Treadaway, spend their honeymoon at a remote lake house, strange occurrences make them think that maybe they aren’t the only ones in town and perhaps some unwanted visitors have malicious intentions. Honeymoon combines elements of home invasion thrillers, science fiction, David Cronenberg and, of course, romance.

Valentine (2001)
Starring baby-faced David Boreanaz, Denise Richards, and Katherine Heigl, Valentine is a pretty typical ’00s slasher. My Bloody Valentine is the clear winner when it comes to slashers based on the holiday, but considering this film’s title, it’s an obvious go-to if you have to try to convince someone you don’t want to watch a romantic comedy. The other 364 days of the years, there’s really no reason to watch Valentine, so you might as well enjoy it while you can.

Maniac (1980/2012)
The original 1980 Maniac stars Joe Spinell is a, well, maniac, but one who somehow manages to go on dates with women. Granted, he murders them, but the fact that he could get a date in the first place is tough to believe. Similarly, the 2012 Maniac stars Elijah Wood as a, well, maniac, who also convinces women who go on dates with him. Both versions of the film serve as more anti-Valentine’s Day movies, as it would give any woman apprehension about agreeing to go on any dates ever again, but by comparison, every date looks better than the main characters in these films.
