From the Funimation panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2016, Funimation Films today announced the acquisition of Shin Godzilla (also known as Godzilla Resurgence), the latest live action Godzilla film from Toho Company. The agreement covers theatrical, video on demand, and broadcast rights across North America, South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Funimation Films plans to bring Shin Godzilla to theaters in late 2016.

Shin Godzilla is a Japanese kaiju (giant monster) movie, and the 29th Toho Godzilla movie (the 32nd Godzilla movie overall). Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi co-wrote and directed the feature. Higuchi was also the director of the 2015 Attack on Titan live action movie. Attack on Titan live action movie stars Hiroki Hasegawa and Satomi Ishihara star in Shin Godzilla, alongside Yutaka Takenouchi.

"Funimation is extremely pleased to be working with Toho to bring Shin Godzilla to audiences across the Americas," said Gen Fukunaga, CEO and President of Funimation in a press release. "Godzilla became a science fiction icon from the moment Toho brought it to the big screen in 1954. We're honored to be a part of its rich history."

"Shin Godzilla represents a brand new chapter in the 62-year history of this iconic science fiction monster," said Mike DuBoise, EVP and COO of Funimation. "We're excited to bring audiences this new vision of Godzilla from Toho as reimagined by directors Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi."

Shin Godzilla represents the third reboot of Toho's Godzilla franchise. The film reimagines Godzilla's original origin story as if would occur in modern Japan.
