Several Westworld actors warned us that tonight’s episode would be a doozy, and they certainly weren’t lying. In the climactic scene of “Trompe D’Oeil”, Bernard and Theresa discovered Ford’s secret host facility. As Theresa looked through a stack of host designs, she saw designs for Dolores, Ford’s younger counterpart, and….Bernard himself. That’s right, it turns out that Bernard was a host all along.

Keen eyed fans saw the signs all along, as Bernard’s behavior was a bit different compared to the other employees in the park. Bernard treated the hosts with a bit more care than the other employees, and even kept his conversations with Dolores (which were held inside Ford’s secret workshop) a secret from the rest of the staff. He also had a loyalty to Ford that none of the other employees seemed to share. Ford also had a surprisingly intimate knowledge of Bernard, knowing about his illicit affair with Theresa and telling him in an early episode that “I know how your brain works.” There was also Bernard’s disturbing encounter in Ford’s secret cabin, when Ford appeared seemingly out of thin air after Ford’s “father” (actually a host made to look like him) attacked Bernard.

But the clues became pretty obvious tonight. When confronted by Charlotte and Theresa about the host’s supposedly flawed updates, Bernard didn’t speak up that Ford was the one was the person who designed them. And later, when Bernard showed Theresa Ford’s cabin, he failed to see the door leading to Ford’s secret workshop. As Ford explained just a bit later, the hosts are programmed not to respond to anything that threatens to disrupt their reality. In this case, Bernard is programmed to think he’s a Westworld employee, so he couldn’t see anything that might indicate otherwise.

We also learned a secret truth about the hosts, that their failsafes against humans can be overriden. While Theresa and Charlotte were able to fake such a scenario using Clementine, it turns out that Ford can command the hosts to kill. And that’s precisely what Ford told Bernard to do to Theresa. Despite Bernard and Theresa’s history and the supposed failsafes, Bernard quietly removed his jacket and tie and then beat Theresa’s head against one of the concrete walls, killing her.

Not only do we have the first “official” fatality of Westworld, tonight’s reveal leaves us with a ton of questions. Now that we know that Bernard was holding his “secret” meetings with Dolores inside of Ford’s workshop, was Bernard acting as Ford’s proxy or was he somehow acting on his own? Is Bernard an original creation, or did Ford base his design off of Arnold or another person from his past? Did Elsie disappear because she told Bernard about her findings….thus leading to Ford knowing that she was getting too close to the truth? And more importantly….are there any other hosts pretending to be human that we don’t know about?

We’ll have plenty more questions and theories about Westworld later this week, so like our Westworld Facebook page to keep up on all the big news and theories.
