Star Trek: A Khan Prequel Series Is Reportedly In Development

It won’t be too long until CBS rolls out its new Star Trek television series, but another may already be in the works already. According to new reports, director Nicholas Meyer is apparently developing a prequel series focused on the almighty Khan.

Reports about Meyer’s Star Trek series cropped up recently after Geek Exchange broke the news. The site is saying the director is putting his Wrath of Khan experience to use on a miniseries of sorts. The limited series is said to fill in gaps between “Space Seed” and The Wrath of Khan. Meyer’s idea for the series is to follow Khan and his crew as they try to survive on the hostile planet of Ceti Alpha V.

For fans, the miniseries would be a welcome one. Meyer is considered one of Star Trek‘s best creators, and he joined Gene Roddenberry’s world back in 1982. The director came in after the lackluster debut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Meyer turned his eye to Khan Noonien Singh and turned him into a bonafide icon in pop culture. After the character debut in Star Trek: The Original Series, Meyer met back up with Khan as the baddie sought revenge against Captain Kirk for exiling his crew.

There is no official confirmation from CBS about the reported Star Trek prequel, but audiences have their hopes. The network has put plenty of stock in its impending debut of Star Trek: Discovery. Still, there are a few snags which may prevent the Khan series from moving forward. The villain’s crew does not have many memorable characters outside of Khan himself, and the villain would need to be recast. Ricardo Montalban passed away in 2009, and it seems unlikely that Benedict Cumberbatch would be asked to step into Star Trek‘s TV-verse following his big screen work as Khan.

Of course, there is also the fact that Trekkies are wary about any Khan revival. The character is a hallowed one in Roddenberry’s canon, but fans should have hope. If anyone is capable of tackling the villain, it is Meyer. With the director on-board for such a prequel, the Star Trek canon might just be expanded for the better.

Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp both play science officers. Mary Wiseman will play a final year Starfleet Academy cadet.

Star Trek: Discovery was created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman. Fuller was originally intended to be Discovery’s showrunner but was forced step down due to commitments to Starz’ adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts have taken over as showrunners.
