An AMC spokesperson offered the following statement to Variety:

“We are aware that this occurred at two of AMC’s 660 locations. The theatres have removed the sign.”

The signs read, “PLEASE NOTE: The Last Jedi contains a sequence at approximately 1 hour and 52 minutes into the movie in which ALL sound stops for about 10 full seconds. While the image continues to play on the screen you will hear nothing. This is intentionally done by the director for a creative effect.”

The signs were apparently meant to stave off confused audience members who believed the effect was a technical audio glitch during screenings.

The moment of silence occurs during one of the most destructive space battle sequences in Star Wars franchise history. Director Rian Johnson seemed to have deployed this silence to underscore a dramatic sacrifice by creating a dissonance between the film’s visuals and audio.
