Over the years, Star Wars has kept itself centrally focused around a very epic saga. The franchise debuts decades ago under the watchful eye of George Lucas, and fans have watched as the Skywalker Saga has unfolded in three separate trilogy sets. Lucasfilm is set to bring another installment to the on-going series this year when Star Wars: The Last Jedi makes it way into theaters. But, for some fans, they are starting to lose interest in the lengthy story.
In some form or fashion, the Star Wars films have all been centered around the Skywalker Saga even if indirectly. The furthest a film has gone from the bloodline is in Rogue One, the franchise’s first standalone. However, the film and its upcoming successor starring Han Solo are still integrally set within the Skywalker Saga’s timeline. Unlike the franchise’s extended universe, Star Wars movies seem set in their storytelling ways, but that won’t always be the case.

Recently, the co-writer of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story sat down with Coming Soon to talk about the film. It was there that Gary Whitta was asked whether the Star Wars films would ever expand their narrative focus. And, in the writer’s opinion, the shift will surely happen.
“The next spin-off is ‘Han Solo,’ that’s another familiar character, but I think increasingly you’re going to see…One of the thing things we really want to do at Lucasfilm is create a universe and not keep relying on old legacy characters. We’ve got Rey and Finn and Kylo Ren, they’ve already introduced a new generation of characters,” Whitta said.
“Whatever kind of Star Wars films they’re making 10 or 20 years from now, I don’t think they’re going to be relying on the same legacy story elements as we have in the past.”
For now, it looks like Star Wars is content to round-out its Skywalker Saga to completion, but Lucasfilm is keeping an eye open for new storytelling opportunities. So, some day in a future, Star Wars fans may just be introduced to yet another galaxy far, far away. Hopefully, they will love it all the same.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi, from writer/director Rian Johnson, is in post-production now for a December 15, 2017 release.
The film follows-up and continues the story of the next generation of the saga as Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo Ren find their place in the galaxy and follow the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Han Solo. Daisy Ridley returns to star as Rey, with other returning stars John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong’o Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern join the cast in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
