Based on trailers and promotional photos, fans could barely contain their excitement for Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, who sadly only had a few minutes of screen time. Luckily, Phasma is returning for The Last Jedi and it looks like her armory has gotten an upgrade.
When speaking with Vanity Fair, member of the Lucasfilm Story Group Pablo Hidalgo revealed that the weapon Christie is seen posing with for the magazine “doesn’t have a fancy name yet.”

As each new Star Wars film gets released, the minds behind the films find new ways to demonstrate new technology. When The Phantom Menace debuted, Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber shocked audiences, similarly to when Kylo Ren first activated his lightsaber in The Force Awakens and we saw the blade extend across the hilt.
The Last Jedi, however, will go a different direction with the elite Phasma, with her new weapon being much more lo-fi. If you’re looking to learn more about Phasma and her weapon, which will reportedly retract into a smaller weapon for close quarters combat, you can check out her comic book series that’s coming out in September.
“Her background,” Hidalgo promises, “is more low-tech than many would assume.”
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens December 15.
