The Star Wars saga is full of diverse characters, creatures, technology, and environments, a trend that will continue with The Last Jedi. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, writer/director Rian Johnson revealed details about a brand-new planet that our characters will visit, named "Canto Bight," which the director compares to a "Monte Carlo" aesthetic.

Johnson created the planet himself, which he describes as "a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little To Catch a Thief." He added, "It was an interesting challenge, portraying luxury and wealth in this universe."

Compared to all of the desolate and uninhabitable environments of the saga, Johnson wanted to see something not quite explored in the films, revealing, "I was thinking, O.K., let's go ultra-glamour. Let's create a playground, basically, for rich a**holes."

Another reason the director wanted to incorporate this environment was to change the film's tone, as most of Last Jedi will be dark and full of gravitas.

Much like visiting the Mos Eisley Cantina or Maz Kanata's castle gave audiences a look at the bizarre creatures in the universe, a visit to Canto Bight will serve the same purpose.

Johnson detailed, "I didn't want this to be a dirge, a heavy-osity movie." He added, "So one thing I've tried really hard to do is keep the humor in there, to maintain the feeling, amid all the heavy operatic moments, that you're on a fun ride."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens December 15.
