Eagle-eyed audiences might have spotted a pair of golden dice dangling in the cockpit of the Millenium Falcon in Star Wars, reflecting the trend of drivers hanging fuzzy dice from the rearview mirrors of their hot rods. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Pablo Hidalgo, a member of the Lucasfilm Story Group, explained the official origins of the dice and their ties to Han Solo‘s gambling history.

“The story that you would hear if you traveled to cantinas or watering holes around the Star Wars galaxy,” Hidalgo reveals, “is that those dice were involved in a game of Corellian Spikeโ€”a dice-using version of a card game called sabacc. Rumor has it Han won the Millennium Falcon [from Lando Calrissian] with those dice. Whether or not that’s just bar talk, I can’t say.”

The Lucasfilm Story Group was created to intertwine all the details of the Star Wars universe, ensuring that there’s one true canon amongst all the films, TV shows, video games, and books.

The dice appeared as a fun Easter Egg in the original Star Wars but didn’t appear again until The Force Awakens. It’s likely that, between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, the production team didn’t remember to include the small detail, but their reappearance is thanks to J.J. Abrams.

The filmmaker heavily studied photos of the ship’s cockpit from the first film in order to recreate it as precisely as possible for Force Awakens, even including those golden dice that hadn’t been seen since 1977.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens December 15.
