One of the recent trends in the world of big budget blockbusters is to hire directors with fewer films to their name to helm massive projects, as opposed to bringing in directors with length careers. Before directing Captain America: Winter Soldier, Joe and Anthony Russo only had a handful of films under their belt and spent most of their career working on sitcoms like Arrested Development and Community. The duo is now currently filming Avengers: Infinity War, which will prove to be one of the biggest films produced by Marvel, and the directors are more than happy to tackle a galaxy far, far away.

When speaking with Variety, the brothers were asked if they were interested in directing a Star Wars film, which they answered with an emphatic “yes.”

Joe detailed his history with the saga, revealing, “I sat in a theater when I was 11 years old and watched The Empire Strikes Back from 10 in the morning until 10 at night the day it came out. To say we’re obsessed with Star Wars is an understatement. We’d absolutely love to do a Star Wars film.”

Although the Russos have proven they can handle big properties through their work with Marvel, another duo with a background in comedy, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, parted ways from the Han Solo spin-off film, so one question would be if the Russos filming techniques would mesh with Lucasfilm’s.

With Colin Trevorrow already attached to direct Episode IX and no other spin-offs announced, the brothers might have to wait a few more years to partner with Lucasfilm.

The untitled Han Solo movie, the next spin-off film, is set to be released May 24, 2018.

More Han Solo News:

The Han Solo movie is being produced by Lucasfilm from a screenplay by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan and will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the second standalone Star Wars movie following Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016.

Set prior to the events of Han Solo’s first appearance in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, the film stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Joonas Suotamo. The film is said to show how Han Solo and Chewbacca, first met Lando Calrissian, played by Glover.

Filming on the Han Solo movie began in January 2017 with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directing. Principal photography began at Pinewood Studios in February. Lord and Miller left the Han Solo movie in June, having reportedly been fired over creative differences. Ron Howard will come on as the director to see the production to completion.
