Alycia Debnam-Carey Was Surprised By Massive Walking Dead Fanbases

Alycia Debnam-Carey is no stranger to avid fanbases. The popular Australian actress left the CW’s The 100 for AMC‘s Fear the Walking Dead, marking involvement with two TV series with devoted admirers.

When Debnam-Carey joined the zombie drama on AMC, she had no idea what she was getting into, it turns out. She was joining the sibling series of The Walking Dead, the most watched show on cable but had never participated in the fandom, herself, until she joined the Dead universe.

“I didn’t know much about the Walking Dead until after I booked the gig and then I watched the first four seasons, I binge watched them in two weeks, and at that moment I realised ‘oh this is a much bigger thing than I thought it was’,” Debnam-Carey told AAP.

“I don’t think I was prepared for it. So it’s been such a sweet surprise.”

Fans of the actress have loyally followed her to the AMC series which nabbed over 3 million viewers in its Season 2 finale last year. By comparison to The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead grabs only about 25% of the viewership, but remains one of the top-rated shows at the network.

“The fans from both shows are totally passionate and very hungry for the next thing,” she said. “It truly opened my eyes up to something I don’t think I was truly aware of, that a character was able to inspire and galvanise people.”

When Fear the Walking Dead returns for its third season on June 4, Debnam-Carey’s Alicia Clark character will be undergoing some serious survival transformations. Still, she can say, “It reflects a lot of themes that are going on in the media at the moment in terms of territory and racism and politics.”
